Motor Insurance
From unexpected accidents to a journey you can pay for.
Cover for accidents, theft, fire, and legal liability on a car or motorcycle — and a clear line between that policy and road tax.
Typical market structure — the wording decides
What motor insurance is
Owning a vehicle is freedom until a crash, a theft, a fire, or a flood. Repair bills and legal liability do not wait for a good month.
Motor insurance pays for covered losses involving the vehicle. Road tax does not. Road tax is the JPJ licence to use public roads. You generally need insurance in force before road tax can be renewed. They are bought together in practice and they are not the same product.
The three main shapes
Names vary slightly by insurer. The structure in the Malaysian market is stable.
- Third party: legal liability for bodily injury or death of a third party, and third-party property damage. It does not pay to repair your own vehicle after a crash.
- Third party, fire and theft: the third-party cover, plus fire and theft of your own vehicle. Your own accident damage is still not covered.
- Comprehensive: the widest of the three. Own damage from a covered accident, plus theft, fire, and third-party liability. Newer, financed, or higher-value vehicles are usually placed here.
Add-ons and no-claim discount
Flood, landslide, falling objects, and windscreen are often special perils or endorsements, not automatic. If your area floods, ask for that line in writing.
A no-claim discount reduces the premium after claim-free years. For private cars it can reach 55%. A claim can set it back. Windscreen and some named perils are sometimes claimable without disturbing the discount — only if the policy says so.
